VideoTale is a Solstizio’s project, born as a space of experimentation at the disposal of the children of primary schools, with the aim of raising their awareness on present urgent social themes (environment, emigrations, wars, etc.) by means of the language of filmmaking. In particular, the short film will preferred as tool most suitable to our needs, thanks both to its short duration, that allows a direct and sober style, and its form close to the cinema of the origins for its simple characteristics and the possibility it gives to the children to expresses all their imagination.
The project is organized through a laboratory in the context of the class and an experience directly on the set. The laboratory starts with the collection of stories on a selected subject that will be later blended and re-elaborated in order to get to the film subject from which the script will originate. This will represent the main moment of the work on images and, after watching parts of films, the children will learn how to tell a story using images. The project will continue with the scenic arrangement and its replication on scale and then on the set, with the support of a professional in that field. The making of costumes will draw the pupils close to their ideas; they will first design and then, helped by and experts, will realize them by using fabrics, paper and other materials. This stage will be important for approaching to the use of recycled materials mostly used in the realization of the set and costumes.
The set will be the place in which the children’s experience of the laboratory will end up and an opportunity of confronting themselves with the representation of their stories. They will be in front of and behind the camera playing the roles of a film crew with the supervision of a director who will help them remaining close to their ideas.
